Art on Queens Wharf

The vertical steel and timber elements you see as you enter Queens Wharf next to the ferry terminal are part of a family of elements that reference the industrial and architectural forms of the working history of Queens Wharf.

The steel elements incorporate a field of lights which reference the wharf as a place or arrival and departure and the navigation/mapping associated with these journeys - by both waka and other ships.

Beneath the poles, original cast iron wharf bollards have been recovered and re-used as informal seating elements.

Waterfront Bike Hire

Both a workout, and a way to work!

Grab a bike from one of our two bike hire stations along the waterfront for a fun, easy way to get around. The bikes are a great way to explore the waterfront or commute around the central city without the worry of parking.

Free for the first two hours, the bikes are located at the Quay Street end of Queens Wharf and next to the Karanga Kiosk in Wynyard Quarter.

You will need to register to use the bikes in advance so when the time comes to use the bikes you are set up and ready to go. It costs $4 to register.

Once you’re registered the first two hours of every ride on the Waterfront Bikes is free. After that, riders are charged $4 an hour to a maximum of $20 for 24 hours.  A registered rider can rent up to 4 bikes at a time so it is easy for groups to hire together.

Visit Next Bike to register.

You'll find the bike stations at Queens Wharf, 89 Quay Street and Karanga Plaza, Corner Jellicoe and Halsey Street, Wynyard Quarter.

Chill out on Queens Wharf

Queens Wharf is one of the best spots in the city to sit back and relax right on the water’s edge. To sweeten the deal, we have bright summer umbrellas and loungers to get comfortable and soak up the atmosphere on. From here you can take in the hustle and bustle of the port to your east and marvel at the Waitemata Harbour and Hauraki Gulf beyond.

At the Queens Street end of the wharf you will find the Queens Wharf wave seats. Designed by Architectus, the wave formation references the sparkling Waitemata Harbour.

Queens Wharf is a public space for you to enjoy. Why not practice some sunrise yoga, pilates, read a book, listen to some tunes, or simply chill out by the water side.

The Lighthouse

The Lighthouse is a new public artwork by New Zealand artist Michael Parekowhai located on the Auckland waterfront. As a gift to the city, Barfoot & Thompson funded the commission of the artwork. Its exterior is in the form of a 1:1 scale 1950s family home and the interior artwork features an installation of light. Come and explore the work by looking in windows, doors and climbing the staircase.

Connections - Reflections Auckland

The Connections project is a photographic challenge in which seven keen photographers have the opportunity to work with top international photographer Tom Ang to create an exhibition from scratch in just five weeks. They have to connect with the concept, connect with each other, and engage with the city.

This year the theme for the Connections project is ‘reflections’ and each photographer has been working over the last month to uncover insights into this theme. The seven photographers congregated to decide on the images that will be on display as part of the Connections Photography Exhibition on the Queens Wharf fence. This year, they worked brilliantly together to shoot, curate and create an elegiac reflection of the city they love.

The Connections Photography Exhibition will open on the Queens Wharf fence on the southern apron of the wharf on Saturday 20 May.
